Biotin , sole-active oral product,
does it really help with Increased target-area non-vellus hair density in adult androgenetic alopecia, with separate sex strata?

30-Second Summary
?
Evidence Grade ? · Safety caution
ChatGPT source review and self-verification · Codex technical integration
Cutoff 2026-09-15. The male/female target strata and proposed comparators are question definitions, not verified trial values. Exact formulation, dose, duration, baseline biotin status, measurement definition, time, arm denominators, between-group effect, CI and MCID remain unverified. Existing records 009, 866 and 1639 were not modified.
Caution: biotin can cause falsely high or low results in selected assays. NIH describes thyroid-test interference within 24 hours of a single 10 mg dose and interference in selected TSH and NT-proBNP assays in 6 healthy adults taking 10 mg/day for 1 week. FDA warns of falsely low results in susceptible troponin assays. These are assay-, exposure- and time-specific observations, not a universal withdrawal interval or toxicity threshold. High-dose long-term hair-use safety in pregnancy, lactation, children and hepatic or renal disease is unverified. This assessment gives no personal dosing, discontinuation or test-scheduling instruction. [S06][S07]
What the
research shows
Within the recorded search scope, no directly eligible result verified that oral biotin alone increases target-area non-vellus density versus a matched-background control in male or female androgenetic alopecia, assessed separately. The current grade is ?, with no numerical score. This is not a finding of no effect. [S01][S02][S03][S04][S05][S10][S11]
What the
ads claim
Improvements in hair counts, diameter, photographs or satisfaction with biotin-containing products cannot be relabelled as non-vellus density improvement in male- or female-pattern alopecia. Natural origin does not mean effects of other extract constituents have been isolated. [S04][S05]

Four separate assessment dimensions

Effect direction and sizeNo directly eligible sex-stratified between-group non-vellus-density result for oral biotin monotherapy was verified
Evidence certainty? is scoped direct-evidence uncertainty, not no effect
ApplicabilityAdults with diagnosed androgenetic alopecia; male and female strata separate; oral biotin as the sole active ingredient; matched-background placebo, no treatment, or usual care
SafetyCaution

B / P / null / null / null / null / null; score and strength count null

Useful facts when choosing a product

  • Manufacturing source, chemical form, batch, purity and excipients of an eligible sole-active product are unverified.
  • Objectively deficient correction is separate from androgenetic alopecia. An absent baseline assay is not evidence of adequate status.
  • The absence of an NIH upper intake level is not used as unlimited safety assurance or a treatment dose. [S06]

Permanent code issued

S.biotin.oral.adult-androgenetic-alopecia-non-vellus-hair-density.increase.placebo-no-treatment-or-usual-care

Substances and nutrients > Biotin (vitamin B7), sole active ingredient > Oral > Target-area non-vellus hair density in sex-stratified adult androgenetic alopecia > Increase claim > Matched-background placebo, no treatment, or usual care

Male and female strata remain separate and only target-area non-vellus density is fixed. Deficiency correction, other alopecia causes, growth speed, diameter, photographs, satisfaction, and multicomponent products remain separate boundaries. The code identifies the intervention and claim; it never contains the evidence grade, score, or safety result.

Exact Claim Classification

These independent facets prevent evidence from different forms, routes, populations, effects, and comparators from being mixed.

Intervention classS · Supplement or nutraceutical
Canonical ingredient or interventionBiotin (vitamin B7), sole active ingredient
Source or part usedNot verified: no eligible trial establishes the source, manufacturing origin or exact chemical form.
Formulation or processingSole-active oral product is the question boundary; actual tablet/capsule, batch, purity and excipients are not verified.
RouteOral, fixed by the question; topical and injectable exposure excluded.
DoseNot verified: eligible regimen dose, frequency and total intake.
DurationNot verified: eligible treatment duration and assessment time.
PopulationAdults with diagnosed androgenetic alopecia; male and female strata separate, no pooled effect; objectively deficient correction and other alopecia causes excluded.
Effect or conditionIncrease target-area non-vellus hair density.
Primary endpointBetween-group change difference in target-area non-vellus density preferred; endpoint difference separate; definition, site, unit, time and denominator not verified.
ComparatorMatched-background placebo, no treatment and usual care considered separately; actual eligible comparator not verified.

What the research actually shows

Patel reports a 90-day trial with 105 randomized and 97 completed healthy adults with nonpathological hair, skin and nail concerns. Even the biotin-labelled arm used Sesbania grandiflora extract, with 250 mg extract and 1.25 mg biotin equivalent per capsule. This exposure was not adopted as an established effective sole-active biotin regimen. [S05]

02

Why this is classified as ?

The question is classified as clinical efficacy B and treatment target P under the supplied rubric. Hair restoration is the target itself; observer measurement alone does not make it a surrogate. With no verified eligible result, grading stops at stage 0, ? and score null. Replication, independence, effect, bias, precision and the strength count remain unscored null. Related human studies do exist.

Counterpoint. Unverified evidence is distinct from no effect. Healthy-person and multicomponent studies are not repeated refutations in male or female androgenetic alopecia. Failed registration or original-text access was not interpreted as evidence of no results or study termination. [S03][S04][S05][S10][S11]

Rejudgment record. Direct eligible result not verified — Original rubric stage 0; bounded search scope

Review performed and remaining limitations

Twelve-axis boundaries were checked against records 009, 866 and 1639, separating healthy-person growth speed, multicomponent products, deficiency correction and other hair outcomes

Eligible product form, formulation, dose, duration, diagnostic criteria, baseline status, sex-specific denominators, assay method, between-group effect, CI, P value and MCID remain unverified
