Intravenous glutathione,
does it really help with Whole-body skin lightening?

30-Second Summary
D
Evidence Grade D · 28 · Safety warning
A direct human study found no significant lightening difference and recorded serious adverse effects
The direct study stopped treatment for abnormal liver tests in eight participants and anaphylaxis in one. Regulatory reviews also list reports of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and kidney dysfunction.
What the
research shows
The grade is D. A nonrandomized saline-controlled study matched on age and skin color measured skin tone after intravenous administration. Fifty entered but only 32 completed; visual improvement occurred in 6/16 (37.5%) with a glutathione combination infusion and 3/16 (18.7%) with saline, P=0.054. Only one participant maintained improvement at six months.
What the
ads claim
Korean clinics widely sell intravenous glutathione as a self-pay “white jade” infusion and publish prices. Distribution is not efficacy evidence. The detailed authorization wording in the cited Korean policy-briefing document could not be verified and was not used for the grade.

Useful facts when choosing a product

  • One nonrandomized age- and skin-color-matched saline-controlled intravenous study directly assessed skin tone; oral and topical evidence was excluded.
  • The endpoint was visual Taylor hyperpigmentation grading, not an instrumented melanin index; all skin-tone measures here are surrogates.
  • Multiple Korean clinics market and sell intravenous glutathione for cosmetic skin lightening.

What the research actually shows

Zubair and colleagues enrolled 25 women aged 25 to 47 who were willing to pay into the active group and assigned an age- and skin-color-matched control for each participant to saline. This was a nonrandomized matched saline-controlled study with twice-weekly treatment for six weeks, 12 infusions total. GSH Detox forte contained glutathione 1,200 mg, vitamin C, and 35 mg hydrolyzed collagen. Two non-sun-exposed sites were assessed with Taylor color cards. Completer results were 6/16 versus 3/16, P=0.054. Oral, buccal, and topical studies were excluded from efficacy assessment because their routes differ.

02

Why this is classified as D (28)

A direct human study exists, but its skin-tone result was null and it had completer analysis, heavy attrition, small sample, and short duration, giving D with 28 points.

Counterpoint. The small imprecise study does not exclude every possible lightening effect.

Rejudgment record. Cross-check applied — Null direct nonrandomized matched saline-controlled intravenous study with completer analysis, 36% attrition, small sample, and short duration

Sub-claim grades by effect

This ingredient is marketed for several effects. A single overall grade blends strong and weak claims together, so each effect is graded separately here. The overall grade reflects the strongest disconfirming or core claim.

Cross-check — AI research and Codex final gate

AI was used for research and drafting. Blind grading, adversarial audit, and the methodology boundary rules were then reapplied before Codex performed the final evidence, grade, copy, and build checks. If a grade cannot be narrowed, both evidence positions and their reasons are published.
