Useful facts when choosing a product
- Whole wheat contains gluten. In celiac disease, gluten from wheat, barley, and rye damages the small intestine, while wheat allergy is a separate immune disorder.
- This does not mean gluten is harmful to everyone without celiac disease or wheat allergy.
- The intervention replaced refined grains; it did not add whole grains on top of the existing diet.
- The UK Food Standards Agency fully funded the study, and no milling or grain-industry research funding was identified.
- Ancient references to the broad grain term mai do not consistently distinguish barley from wheat, so no specific classical whole-wheat claim is made.

What the research actually shows
The Tighe paper was cross-checked against ISRCTN27657880. Twenty-four participants withdrew and three were excluded, leaving 206 analyzed. Registration occurred in January 2010 after a 2005 start and June 2009 completion. The registered primary outcomes, total and LDL cholesterol and insulin sensitivity, were analyzed and reported but showed no whole-grain benefit. Blood pressure was not a registered primary outcome, and no adjusted between-group confidence interval was reported.

A publicly funded trial found an approximately 6 mmHg reduction, but blood pressure was a surrogate and not a registered primary outcome. Post-completion registration, null registered primary outcomes, and the missing between-group confidence interval yield C with 50 points.
