Raw milk,
does it really help with Improved lactose digestion and lactose-intolerance symptoms versus pasteurized milk?
research showsThe grade is D with 28 points. In a randomized blinded crossover of 16 adults with test-confirmed lactose malabsorption, raw milk did not reduce symptoms versus pasteurized whole milk. After 473 mL on day 1, breath-hydrogen AUC was 113 +/- 21 versus 71 +/- 12 (P=0.01). Among 14 analyzed on day 8, it was 72 +/- 14 versus 74 +/- 15 and no difference was detected (P=0.9); this did not prove equivalence. The table's plus-or-minus values are standard errors. The 710 mL symptom analysis in 13 participants also found no superiority.
ads claimLactose intolerance concerns lactose digestion and symptoms and is distinct from cow's-milk allergy. Verdict 2055 is C with 52 points and compares A2 with conventional milk, a casein-type question. This verdict instead isolates pasteurization status in whole milk and asks about lactose intolerance.
Useful facts when choosing a product
- Product labels reported 11.6 g lactose per 237 mL in both raw and pasteurized milk. Both also listed 7.8 g fat, 7.8 g protein, and 145 kcal.
- Pasteurization did not remove lactose in these products. A 473 mL challenge supplied about 23.2 g lactose from either dairy milk.
- Lactose malabsorption is measured by breath hydrogen, whereas lactose intolerance refers to symptoms after lactose. Malabsorption does not cause symptoms in everyone.
What the research actually shows
Adults reporting moderate to severe lactose intolerance were screened, and 16 with both a breath-hydrogen rise of at least 25 ppm and symptoms were enrolled. They consumed raw milk, pasteurized whole milk, and soy beverage for eight days each in randomized order with one-week washouts. Breath hydrogen after 473 mL was analyzed in 16 on day 1 and 14 on day 8, while the 710 mL symptom analysis omitted three participants who could not complete every dose, leaving 13. Funding combined an unrestricted Weston A. Price Foundation gift and a Stanford student stipend; Organic Pastures donated and shipped the raw milk.
Why this is classified as D (28)
The prospectively registered direct digestion and symptom results showed no superiority, but the evidence had only 16 participants, eight-day phases, and a 13-participant completer symptom analysis with no paired interval, giving D with 28 points.
Counterpoint. D does not deny every individual experience; it means general superiority over pasteurized milk was unsupported in the direct trial.
Rejudgment record. Cross-check applied — The original tables and registry were checked for product lactose, analysis counts, day-1 and day-8 breath hydrogen, the 13-participant symptom analysis, blinding, funding, and product donation
| Endpoint | P | Patient-reported treatment goal - the symptom is the goal |
| Replication | R1 | Single confirmatory trial |
| Independence | I1 | Mixed funding sources |
| Effect size | E0 | Null |
| Precision | CX | No pooled confidence interval could be confirmed |
The scoring table and the verdict agree (D).
Sub-claim grades by effect
This ingredient is marketed for several effects. A single overall grade blends strong and weak claims together, so each effect is graded separately here. The overall grade reflects the strongest disconfirming or core claim.
| Effect (sub-claim) | Grade | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Raw milk lowers breath hydrogen versus pasteurized milk | D | It was higher on day 1 and no different on day 8. |
| Raw milk reduces lactose-intolerance symptoms versus pasteurized milk | D | No superiority appeared in the 13 completers who consumed every 710 mL dose. |

| Study | Design | Sample | Funding | Endpoint | Result | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Study 1 | Randomized blinded three-period eight-day crossover pilot trial | 13 | Unrestricted Weston A. Price Foundation gift and Stanford student stipend; raw milk donated and shipped by Organic Pastures | Four-hour breath-hydrogen AUC after 473 mL and gas, diarrhea, bowel sounds, and cramping | Values are standard errors: day 1 raw 113 +/- 21 versus pasteurized 71 +/- 12 (P=0.01); day 8 72 +/- 14 versus 74 +/- 15 (P=0.9), no detected difference but not proof of equivalence; no symptom superiority | Only prospectively registered direct comparison, limited by very small size, short phases, and completer symptom analysis |
