In a 24-month trial that assigned nine Beijing schools and 757 ten-year-old girls, height gain was 0.7 percentage points greater with calcium-fortified milk than with no supplemental milk. Only 681 had complete final data, and the analysis treated a school-randomized design at the individual level. The result does not establish benefit from ordinary milk in well-nourished children or greater adult height.

- The 330 mL trial UHT milk contained 560 mg total calcium, about 9.9 g protein, about 9.9 g fat, no more than about 16.5 g lactose, and 6.6 g sucrose. The 560 mg was not the added fortification amount.
- Although 330 mL was provided on school days, the calendar-day average over 24 months was 144 mL milk and 245 mg supplemental calcium per day.
- The nutrient composition is factual, but ordinary unfortified milk, nutritionally sufficient children, boys, and final adult height were not tested.
- Verdict 249 concerns isolated milk basic protein and bone markers, while verdict 1997 concerns whole full-fat yogurt and bone metabolism; neither duplicates fortified milk and measured height growth.
What the research actually shows
Nine schools were allocated to calcium-fortified milk for 238 girls, the same milk plus vitamin D for 260, or no supplemental milk for 259. Of 757 randomized, 698 completed 24 months and 681 complete datasets entered the final analysis. The height comparison used 207, 240, and 234 girls. The original paper reports support from the Australian Dairy Research and Development Corporation and Nestlé Foundation, product formulation and supply by Murray Goulburn, transport-cost support from the Australian Dairy Corporation, and support from Austrade. Danone China, listed in the target report, was not a funder of this original trial.

A conventionally moderate two-year height effect came from one mixed-funded cluster trial with complete-case analysis and failure to account for clustering, giving C with 52 points.
