What the research actually shows
Hausenblas and colleagues assigned 80 adults aged 35 to 55 with self-reported sleep problems to 1 g/day of Magtein or placebo for 21 days. Between-group interactions favored Magtein for Oura deep-sleep score, P<0.001, rapid-eye-movement-sleep score, P=0.020, light-sleep time, P=0.006, several activity and readiness measures, post-awakening behavior, energy, and productivity. A correction disclosed retrospective registration in 2024 and that AIDP commissioned and funded the study, owned patents, and paid or retained three authors. Lopresti and Smith assigned 100 adults aged 18 to 45 to 2 g/day for six weeks. Sleep-related impairment improved, P=0.043, but sleep disturbance, P=0.316, restorative sleep, P=0.439, wellbeing, P=0.436, and all Oura sleep outcomes were null. Threotech provided funding, intellectual property, design conceptualization, and product.
Why this is classified as C (44)
Some objective estimates and subjective outcomes were positive in the 80-person trial, but all objective sleep outcomes were null in the 100-person trial and both studies were industry-funded tests of the same branded ingredient. Small samples, conflicting findings, multiple endpoints, wearable surrogates, and the manufacturer-supported ceiling give C with 44 points. Diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and magnesium accumulation with impaired kidney function are separate safety issues.
Counterpoint. Anyone trying it should check elemental magnesium and overlap with other supplements and consider causes such as sleep apnea, depression, anxiety, medicines, and caffeine. Persistent insomnia warrants clinical assessment regardless of supplement response.
