Far-infrared-emitting pajamas,
does it really help with Improved sleep quality in adults with poor sleep?
research showsThe grade is D with 30 points. In a 40-person double-blind sham-controlled trial, the prespecified PSQI changed from 9.50 to 8.34 with FIR pajamas and from 9.15 to 7.28 with sham at six weeks, numerically favoring sham. The between-group time effect was dppc2=-0.231, P=.255, and the overall time-by-group P value was .439. No confidence interval was reported, so meaningful benefit was not excluded, but this trial did not support the sleep claim.
ads claimA textile's infrared-emission property does not establish better sleep. This pajama trial found no added sleep benefit. Verdict 1459 is D with 27 points for far-infrared sauna in rheumatic symptoms, a different delivery method and indication.
Useful facts when choosing a product
- FIR pajamas combined cotton with physically modified emitting fiber; sham pajamas used appearance-matched ordinary fiber.
- Six-week PSQI was 8.34 with FIR and 7.28 with sham, P=.255.
- Verdict 1459 is D with 27 points for far-infrared sauna in a different indication.
What the research actually shows
The 2023 pilot RCT by Chen SC, Cheung TW, Yu BY, Chan MY, Yeung WF, and Li L randomized 40 participants, 20 per group. An independent researcher created a computer list with blocks of four to six; only the clothing-delivery staff member received allocation, while participants, assessors, and analysts were masked. GEE used all available data from 40 participants; 18 FIR and 17 sham participants completed six weeks. NCT04890002 and the article agree on PSQI as primary. Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel grant ITP/001/18TP funded the trial, and the authors reported no conflict and no funder role.
Why this is classified as D (30)
A nonprofit-funded double-blind trial had a null prespecified sleep endpoint and did not report a confidence interval. Without repeated refutation, this gives D with 30 points.
Counterpoint. Physical infrared emission and clinical sleep efficacy are separate questions.
Rejudgment record. Cross-check applied — Cross-checked the article and NCT record for PSQI prespecification, 40-person GEE analysis, time-specific effects and P values, randomization, masking, completer counts, nonprofit funding, and unreported 95% confidence interval
| Endpoint | P | Patient-reported treatment goal - the symptom is the goal |
| Replication | R1 | Single confirmatory trial |
| Independence | I2 | Decisive evidence is publicly or non-profit funded |
| Effect size | E0 | Null |
| Precision | CX | No pooled confidence interval could be confirmed |
The scoring table and the verdict agree (D).
Sub-claim grades by effect
This ingredient is marketed for several effects. A single overall grade blends strong and weak claims together, so each effect is graded separately here. The overall grade reflects the strongest disconfirming or core claim.
| Effect (sub-claim) | Grade | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Improved sleep quality over six weeks | D | The PSQI between-group P value was .255 and sham improved more numerically. |
| Improved sleep-diary outcomes | D | Seven-day sleep-diary outcomes also showed no significant between-group differences. |
