Breathe Right nasal strips,
does it really help with Improved sleep quality in people with chronic nocturnal nasal congestion?

30-Second Summary
D
Evidence Grade D · 28 · Safety acceptable
Breathe Right did not improve the primary sleep outcomes in two related trials
Mild application-site skin irritation or discomfort is the main concern. Avoid use on damaged skin or with adhesive allergy, and seek evaluation for persistent obstruction or suspected sleep apnea.
What the
research shows
The grade is D with 28 points. In two GSK trials of 140 and 130 participants, the co-primary NRQLQ Sleep Problems domain and morning tired-unrefreshed item were no better than placebo at days 7 or 14. The trials had separate registrations but shared authors, sponsor, timing, and protocol structure, so they were not inflated into independent repeated refutation.
What the
ads claim
Mechanically pulling the external nose open can enlarge the passage, but that is a different claim from improving sleep quality. The primary patient-reported sleep outcomes were not better than placebo.

Useful facts when choosing a product

  • The active device was an asymmetric butterfly external nasal dilator; placebo had matching appearance without functional spring force.
  • Both trials used the strip for about eight hours nightly over 14 days.
  • PMID 31485980 is a correction notice, not a new clinical study.

What the research actually shows

Two two-site US trials compared the strip with a visually matched nonspring placebo for 14 days. Study 1 analyzed all 140 randomized participants by intention to treat; Study 2 analyzed 128 of 130. Dispensing staff allocated treatment from a sponsor-provided schedule, while other personnel able to influence outcomes were masked. Both trials finished in 2010-2011 but were registered in 2018, each enrolled fewer than 200 people, and chronic sleep problems were assessed for only 14 days. Both were funded by GSK Consumer Healthcare, and two authors were GSK employees. PMID 31485980 is an open-access correction to the article, not a separate trial.

02

Why this is classified as D (28)

Co-primary sleep outcomes were null across the same GSK development program, but exact intervals and a clinical boundary were unavailable, giving D with 28 points rather than independent repeated refutation.

Counterpoint. Temporary nasal-opening or easier-breathing effects are separate outcomes and are not denied by this sleep-quality verdict.

Rejudgment record. Cross-check applied — Cross-checked the article with NCT03549117 and NCT03549130 for co-primary outcomes, intention-to-treat denominators, allocation and masking, retrospective registration, shared sponsorship, and the correction notice

Sub-claim grades by effect

This ingredient is marketed for several effects. A single overall grade blends strong and weak claims together, so each effect is graded separately here. The overall grade reflects the strongest disconfirming or core claim.

Cross-check — AI research and Codex final gate

AI was used for research and drafting. Blind grading, adversarial audit, and the methodology boundary rules were then reapplied before Codex performed the final evidence, grade, copy, and build checks. If a grade cannot be narrowed, both evidence positions and their reasons are published.
