Useful facts when choosing a product
- Cistanches Herba may use distinct species including Cistanche deserticola and Cistanche tubulosa, and findings from one species should not automatically be treated as evidence for the other.
- Products vary among water or ethanol extracts, powders, and preparations standardized to phenylethanoid glycosides, echinacoside, or acteoside, producing exposures unlike one another and unlike animal experiments.
- Many human fatigue and cognition studies use combinations with Ginkgo biloba or other ingredients, so any effect cannot be attributed to cistanche alone.
- Human lifespan or healthspan claims require long-term randomized or credible survival evidence; antioxidant values, fatigue, and memory scores are not themselves proof of lifespan extension.
What the research actually shows
Zhang and colleagues fed Cistanche deserticola extract to SAM-P8 mice and assessed survival curves and immunosenescence, reporting a lifespan signal. Lin and colleagues measured lifespan, oxidative-stress resistance, learning behavior, and gene expression in Cistanche tubulosa-treated fruit flies. Kan and colleagues in 2021 gave 190 adults a 60-day combination of Cistanche tubulosa 300 or 450 mg and Ginkgo biloba 120 or 180 mg and reported fatigue-scale changes, but it was a combination and had no lifespan endpoint. Guo and colleagues in 2013 conducted an open uncontrolled cognition study in 18 Alzheimer patients, again without aging-rate or survival outcomes.
