A 2022 meta-analysis of 25 randomized trials, however, found no significant effect on weight, with a mean difference of -0.32 kg (95% CI -3.15 to 2.51), or on body mass index, with a mean difference of -0.06 kg/m². The positive human trial is accepted, but branded-ingredient manufacturer funding, a small sample, short follow-up, subjective snack diaries, and a null pooled weight effect limit the verdict to C with 43 points. Results cannot be assumed for ordinary saffron or differently standardized products, and usual-dose tolerability versus high-dose, long-term, or pregnancy risk is kept separate from efficacy.

- The Satiereal trial used a standardized branded extract at 176.5 mg/day, not culinary saffron itself, and other products may not match its crocin and safranal profile or extraction method.
- Botanical identity, marker-compound standardization, contamination control, and serving size vary across supplements, so one product's clinical result cannot be transferred automatically to another.
- Saffron is generally tolerated at conventional short-term doses, but gastrointestinal symptoms, headache, and dizziness have been reported, while high-dose and long-term data are more limited.
- Because high supplemental doses may stimulate the uterus, use beyond culinary amounts during pregnancy should be discussed with a clinician. This safety issue is separate from weight-loss efficacy.
What the research actually shows
Gout and colleagues randomized 60 healthy women with a body mass index of 25 to 28 kg/m² to Satiereal 176.5 mg/day or placebo. Snacking frequency and weight favored Satiereal after eight weeks, but behavioral data relied on daily participant food diaries and the branded-ingredient supplier Inoreal funded the research. Tahmasbi and colleagues synthesized 25 randomized trials in overweight or obese patients; weight, body mass index, and waist and hip circumference were nonsignificant. An isolated waist-to-hip-ratio signal does not prove direct weight loss. This verdict is separate from saffron research on depression, sleep, macular disease, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The manufacturer and surrogate ceiling gives C with 43 points; tolerability, pregnancy caution, and product variability remain separate from efficacy.
