Metabolaid,
does it really help with Reduced appetite, body fat, and body weight in adults with overweight?
research showsMetabolaid receives C with 49 points because several small randomized trials reported signals for appetite, weight, waist, and body-fat reduction. A 33-person crossover trial reduced subjective appetite and calories consumed at one meal, while parallel trials with 56 and 84 participants reported improvements in selected weight and body-composition measures versus placebo. All studies, however, center on the same lemon-verbena and hibiscus proprietary blend, with Monteloeder involved through product supply, author affiliations, patents, or development links; they were also short, single-center studies with multiple outcomes. The signal is accepted, but the rule ②-b ceiling of C applies because independent large and long-term replication is absent.
ads claimMarketing can expand short-term appetite scores and body-composition changes into fat burning, a GLP-1 booster, or drug-like durable weight loss. Trials evaluated a specified 500-mg proprietary blend under limited lifestyle conditions and do not guarantee the same effect from tea or arbitrary mixtures.
Useful facts when choosing a product
- The tested Metabolaid formulation generally combined 325 mg of lemon-verbena extract with 175 mg of hibiscus extract for a total proprietary daily dose of 500 mg.
- The standardized polyphenol composition of the branded ingredient is not equivalent to generic herbal tea or nonstandard blends, so results cannot be transferred automatically to other products.
- Most studies lasted eight to twelve weeks and did not evaluate long-term maintenance of weight or fat loss or clinical outcomes such as cardiovascular events.
- Short trials generally reported good tolerability, but pregnancy, lactation, liver or kidney disease, and concurrent blood-pressure or glucose medicines require attention to ingredient interactions and product quality.
What the research actually shows
Herranz-López and colleagues in 2019 assigned 56 adults with overweight or obesity to 500 mg of the blend or placebo with an isocaloric diet for eight weeks; weight, waist, and body-fat improvements were strongest in the overweight subgroup. Marhuenda and colleagues in 2020 randomized 84 adults with BMI 25 to 35 to 500 mg of Metabolaid or placebo for 84 days and reported reductions in weight, BMI, and body fat by bioimpedance and densitometry, but two company employees were coauthors. The 33-person crossover trial by Serna and colleagues in 2022 favored the blend on satiety ratings and calories consumed at an ad libitum meal, but was very small and relied heavily on subjective outcomes. No large independent long-term trial outside this research network was identified.
Why this is classified as C (49)
Signals across three small placebo-controlled trials make D or ? inappropriate. All positive data are nevertheless concentrated in the same proprietary blend and developer-linked network, with short single-center designs and prominent subjective or surrogate outcomes. Rules ① and ②-b therefore yield C with 49 points. Safety is recorded independently from efficacy.
Counterpoint. A modest adjunctive appetite effect is possible, but it cannot replace total energy control, diet quality, physical activity, and sleep, and it has not been shown equivalent to obesity medicines.
Rejudgment record. New verdict — Accepted consistent short-term signals from a 33-person appetite crossover trial and 56- and 84-person placebo-controlled weight and body-fat trials, but applied the rule ① and ②-b ceiling of C because evidence is concentrated in the proprietary Metabolaid blend, Monteloeder employees, products, patents, and development links recur, surrogate outcomes dominate, and independent long-term replication is absent
Sub-claim grades by effect
This ingredient is marketed for several effects. A single overall grade blends strong and weak claims together, so each effect is graded separately here. The overall grade reflects the strongest disconfirming or core claim.
| Effect (sub-claim) | Grade | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Reduced appetite, body fat, and weight in adults with overweight | C | Several small short-term trials were positive, but evidence is concentrated in the same proprietary ingredient and developer-linked research. |
| Long-term replication independent of the developer | ? | No large independent trial replicating durable weight maintenance was identified. |
| Attribution to all lemon-verbena and hibiscus blends and clinically large weight loss | ? | Evidence does not establish transfer from the standardized proprietary blend to other products or clinically large durable loss. |

Evidence Table
| Study | Design | Sample | Funding | Endpoint | Result | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Herranz-López M et al. 2019 | Eight-week randomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel trial | 56 | Spanish public and regional research support with Monteloeder development links | Body weight, waist circumference, body-fat percentage, and metabolic measures | The blend was associated with reductions in weight, waist, and body fat, with larger effects especially in the overweight subgroup. | Direct short-term efficacy with subgroup dependence |
| Marhuenda J et al. 2020 | Eighty-four-day randomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel trial | 42 | Monteloeder supplied the patented product; two company employees were coauthors | Body weight, BMI, and body fat by bioimpedance and densitometry | Metabolaid favored reductions in weight, BMI, and especially trunk fat compared with placebo. | Key proprietary-ingredient trial |
| Serna A et al. 2022 | Two-period randomized double-blind placebo-controlled crossover trial | 33 | European Union Horizon 2020 INNOPREFAT; same development network | Appetite visual-analog scales, satiety quotient, ad libitum meal calories, and appetite hormones | Subjective appetite and calories consumed at one meal favored the blend, but the sample was small and this was not a long-term weight-loss outcome. | Direct appetite signal with subjective outcomes |
