Flurbiprofen 8.75 mg lozenge,
does it really help with Relief of acute sore-throat pain and difficulty swallowing?

30-Second Summary
C
Evidence Grade C · 46 · Safety caution
The 8.75 mg lozenge modestly improved acute sore-throat pain, but evidence is limited to short manufacturer trials
Oral pain, stomatitis, paresthesia, throat irritation, abdominal pain, and nausea were reported. Despite the low local dose, NSAID gastrointestinal bleeding, renal and cardiovascular risks, anticoagulant interactions, and hypersensitivity still require caution.
What the
research shows
The grade is C with 46 points. Pain improved more than with a matched inactive lozenge, but the evidence is confined to a manufacturer development program. This verdict is limited to the 8.75 mg lozenge, not systemic flurbiprofen tablets or injections.
What the
ads claim
Korean pharmacy sore-throat products are locally dissolved lozenges. Evidence from systemic flurbiprofen must not be substituted for this formulation.

What the research actually shows

NCT01048866 randomized 198 adults, 101 versus 97, to flurbiprofen 8.75 mg or a sugar-based placebo lozenge every 3-6 hours, up to five in 24 hours. The primary endpoint was 24-hour time-weighted SPID; 194 participants were evaluable. Two-hour swallowing-difficulty sums were -37.1 (SD 39.60) versus -18.1 (SD 29.43). The study belonged to the Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare International development program.

02

Why this is classified as C (46)

Patient-reported pain improved, but magnitude was about 0.45 SD and the small evidence base was manufacturer-only, giving C with 46 points. Follow-up was appropriate for acute sore throat.

Counterpoint. C does not mean no analgesic action; it marks limited independence, duration, size, and clinical interpretability.

Rejudgment record. Cross-check applied — Placebo-lozenge comparison, 24-hour SPID, Cohen's statistical magnitude convention, manufacturer funding, and small trials

Stored scoring profile
EndpointPSymptom or function itself is the target - including patient reports and performance tests
ReplicationR1Single confirmatory trial
IndependenceI0Evidence comes only from manufacturer studies

Stored derived and displayed grades match; this is not a current recalculation or validity check (C).

Sub-claim grades by effect

This ingredient is marketed for several effects. A single overall grade blends strong and weak claims together, so each effect is graded separately here. The overall grade reflects the strongest disconfirming or core claim.

Effect (sub-claim)GradeBasis
Relief of sore-throat pain over 24 hoursCThe result favored active lozenges, with a standardized magnitude of about 0.45.
Relief of difficulty swallowingCThe two-hour summed values were -37.1 versus -18.1.

Cross-check — AI research and Codex final gate

AI was used for research and drafting. Blind grading, adversarial audit, and the methodology boundary rules were then reapplied before Codex performed the final evidence, grade, copy, and build checks. If a grade cannot be narrowed, both evidence positions and their reasons are published.
