In a 2012 crossover trial of 12 exercise-trained men, body mass, fluid retention, plasma osmolality, urine specific gravity, and treadmill time to exhaustion did not differ among water, pure coconut water, coconut water from concentrate, and a sports drink. An eight-person trial in 2002 also found no difference in weight regain or rehydration index among the three drinks. In a 2026 eight-person trial, urine output was lower than with flavored water, but final fluid status did not differ among coconut water, flavored water, and a sports drink, and the authors concluded that coconut water was equally effective as the sports drink. It can supply fluid and electrolytes, but comparative superiority and endurance enhancement are unproven.
ads claimMarketing uses potassium content and a natural image to promise faster electrolyte absorption, more complete rehydration, and longer endurance. Sodium, which matters during prolonged heavy sweating, can be low and product-dependent, and natural-food status is not clinical evidence of superior performance.

What the research actually shows
Saat and colleagues randomized eight participants in a crossover trial to replace 120% of fluid lost after about 2.8% dehydration with water, coconut water, or a carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage. Weight regain was 73%, 75%, and 80%, respectively, but differences were not significant, and rehydration index and net fluid balance did not differ. Kalman and colleagues compared four drinks in 12 men after about 2% dehydration and found no difference in any hydration marker or treadmill performance; coconut-water conditions produced more bloating and stomach upset. The latest eight-person trial by Bell and Spriet found equal urine output with coconut water and a sports drink and less than with flavored water, but final fluid status was the same in all groups. These small studies cannot exclude subtle differences, but they do not establish superiority.
Why this is classified as D (30)
Crossover trials with eight to 12 participants found broadly equivalent hydration, and the direct performance trial found no difference in time to exhaustion across four drinks. Despite the absence of a large trial, repeated failure to support superiority gives D with 30 points. High potassium, sugar, and gastrointestinal discomfort are separate safety and product-selection issues.
Counterpoint. If taste and cost are acceptable and kidney function is normal, coconut water can be chosen as a postexercise beverage. The reason should be preference and the overall fluid, electrolyte, and energy plan, not superior recovery performance.
